Indeed, using similar sequences as used in the psychophysical experiments, the experimental results were fully replicated computationally (Wallraven 2007).

Moreover, the computational experiments provided additional information as to which facial features might be used to drive such a spatiotemporal association of subsequent frames predictions that could be tested in further psychophysical experiments, thus closing the loop between perception research and computer vision. One of the major criticisms of exemplar-based approaches is that they require, in the strictest sense of the de nition, too many exemplars to be able to work ef ciently as they substitute computation (of elaborate features such as geons, e.g.

) with memory (storing of exemplars). This leads to an explosion of storage requirements and, therefore, to problems with recognition, because retrieval cannot be done ef ciently anymore. The framework described here addresses this problem in the following way:.

Local features are us ed to signi cantly reduce the memory footprint of visual representations. The extraction and modeling of stable, appearance-based local features as the basis of object representations has been shown to provide excellent generalization capabilities for categorization and very good discrimination capabilities for recognition.
