. 14. An Overview of Xen Enterprise Management Tools This chapter focuse .NET QR s on tools and support for running Xen in an enterprise environment. The main purpose of these tools is to provide a GUI interface to simplify the process of guest creation and provisioning.

Most tools also provide management consoles for controlling and monitoring currently running guests. Many tools provide support for managing multiple physical hosts and their virtual guests, including support for migration of guests between machines. Many tools provide support for administering many virtual guests in a uniform manner, such as user account management or package management support.

Some tools are specific to Xen while others can be used with other virtualization systems as well. We begin with an overview of the programmatic interfaces to the Xen hypervisor, around which system management tools such as this can be built. We then survey Enterprise Xen products and Xen management software.

Specifically, we examine XenEnterprise, XenServer, and XenExpress from XenSource; Virtualization Manager from IBM; Virt-Manager from Red Hat; Enomalism from Enomaly; and XenMan from the ConVirt Project.. Programmatic Interfaces to the Xen Hypervisor Before jumping into QR for .NET a survey of management tools for Xen systems, we describe the interfaces on which all of these management tools are built. Some interfaces are unique to Xen, but increasingly the Xen hypervisor is being modified to support a standard set of interfaces that can be used by other virtualization systems as well.

This trend recognizes that the tasks involved in managing a set of virtual machines is similar regardless of whether the underlying virtualization system is Xen, VMware, QEMU, KVM, or any other system. Some systems may support unique features, but the basic functions of creating new VMs, allocating resources to VMs, starting or stopping VMs, and querying the status of VMs remain constant. Many other features are similar not only throughout virtualization systems, but also to managing a large cluster of physical machines.

Standard interfaces allow software developers who invest in cluster management and virtualization management systems to deploy their software with a wide variety of underlying technologies. Standard interfaces also allow system administrators who invest in deploying and understanding the subtleties of certain management software to continue use even if they switch virtualization technologies..

An organization called the Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF) oversees the standardization of CIM. models, protocols, documents, usage, and certification.
